Tortoise
A 50 cm land tortoise with a high domed shell of raised plates showing growth rings, and four stumpy scaly legs with clawed feet. Walks very slowly in a four-beat crawl, elbows out, the head pushing forward on its neck with every step. Sulcata, Galapagos giant (1.2 m), leopard, star or Hermann.

Passed the validator: real scale, rests on y = 0, front faces +Z, deterministic, planted feet never slide past 1 mm.
Use it
Code for the specimen as it is set up above; it follows your knobs.
import { createAsset } from 'https://gaitkit.com/cdn/tortoise.mjs';
import { walker } from 'https://gaitkit.com/runtime/walk.mjs';
const tortoise = createAsset();
scene.add(tortoise); // rests on y = 0, front faces +Z
const gait = walker(tortoise, { ground: (x, z) => terrainHeight(x, z) }); // or omit ground for a flat floor
let dist = 0;
renderer.setAnimationLoop(() => {
dist += speed * clock.getDelta();
tortoise.position.z = dist;
gait.poseAt(dist); // feet stay planted, at any frame rate
renderer.render(scene, camera);
});import { useMemo, useRef } from 'react';
import { useFrame } from '@react-three/fiber';
import { createAsset } from 'https://gaitkit.com/cdn/tortoise.mjs';

export function Tortoise({ speed = 1 }) {
const model = useMemo(() => createAsset(), []);
const gait = useMemo(() => walker(model), [model]);
const dist = useRef(0);

}# Import tortoise.glb (download below). It carries an in-place "Walk" animation.
@onready var anim: AnimationPlayer = $Tortoise/AnimationPlayer
func _physics_process(delta):
velocity = transform.basis.z * speed
move_and_slide()
anim.play("Walk")
anim.speed_scale = speed / 0.15 # Walk clip covers 0.15 m/s at 1x// Import tortoise.glb with glTFast (com.unity.cloud.gltfast).
animator.Play("Walk");
animator.speed = speed / 0.15 // Walk clip covers 0.15 m/s at 1xUse the gaitkit MCP server: get_variant({ "id": "tortoise", "want": "default look" })
then place the result and walk it with walker() so the feet stay planted.

| Knob | Type | Values | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|---|
kind | choice | sulcata galapagos leopard star hermann | sulcata | Species: sulcata (sandy tan shell with deep growth rings, 50 cm), galapagos (giant slate-grey tortoise, 1.2 m), leopard (cream shell with black flecks), star (black plates with radiating yellow star rays), hermann (small yellow-and-black garden tortoise). |
dome | range | 0.6 to 1.5, step 0.05 | 1 | Shell height. 0.6 is a flat pancake-like shell; 1.5 is a tall bubble dome. |
plates | range | 0 to 1, step 0.05 | 0.6 | How much each shell plate bulges between the grooves. 0 is a smooth dome; 1 is knobbly pyramids. |
seed | range | 1 to 30, step 1 | 8 | Seed for the flecks, blotches and scale shading; every number is a different tortoise. |
size | range | 0.15 to 6, step 0.05 | 1 | Uniform scale on top of the species size. 1 is real size; 0.15 is a hatchling; 6 is a giant fantasy tortoise big enough to carry a house. |
